Festival Update From The Pres

From the Membrane of the Nucleus

From The Membrane of the Nucleus, 2022

Greetings Live Theatre Boosters!

Just a quick note to bring you up to speed on the progress that the V.U.T.C. has made in regards to the Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays and a reminder of our next upcoming Organizing Committee meeting to anyone wishing to attend.

The last day for Playwrights to submit one act plays for the 2023 Festival, which will be held this year September 7-10 at Old Newmarket Town Hall, 460 Botsford St, was Feb 28, and at a glance, it looks like we’ve received more entries than any other year. In fact almost double what we received last year, again with entries coming in from all over the world! I believe our Live-streaming has also helped in that area adding hundreds of additional international viewers of the plays because of it and we hope to continue offering  them.

This is exciting news and tells us we’ve been doing something right, such as being lucky to acquire some outstanding plays to showcase as well as attracting excellent Directors and Actors, and to that end, should any of you be interested in joining our scripts reading committee ( if you’re not already) please let me know. Just be aware, there are plenty to read through!

I also tried to emphasize that we were hoping to attract a more diverse selection this year from Playwright ethnicities, to subject matter, to viewpoints, and believe we have achieved this including attracting an entry from an indigenous Writer and Actor(s). I will also work towards having a smudging opening ceremony included as well if I’m able.

We are again hoping to offer free young people’s theatre writing, acting, directing workshops run by our own Kira Rosenbloom and have high hopes the young company will produce some wonderful new plays for the Sept 10 Matinee show.

There are some challenges we must meet to maintain and continue to grow the festival in 2023 and I hope some of you who have helped make it happen in the past – from sponsors, to Directors to event volunteers – will continue to add your support to ensure that happens! And your good deeds did not go unheeded, marked recently by recognition award received from our Ontaruio Government representative, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy.

I thank you for your continuing support!
