N.I.F.O.A.P. Reading Committee Makes Festival Choices
The NIFOAP Reading Committee has announced the winning plays which will be featured in the 2024 festival which runs September 5-8 at the Newmarket Old Town Hall auditorium. After months of reading and narrowing the list down from 300 entries they finally decided upon 7 plays that will make up this years festival (as well an addition 3 from the VUTC Young Company for a Sunday matinee show).
The Season has been decided!
Congratulations to the winning Playwrights and a big thank-you to all who entered. the choices were not easy and as always good plays get left out as we simply cannot do them all! That said, here are the plays chosen for the 2024 Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays #NIFOAP2024, in order of performances.
Thursday September 5 – Showtime 8pm – Doors Open 7 P.M. – Includes Opening Night Red Carpet Party
Phone Solicitor by Brad Dickson, Omaha Nebraska, U.S.A.- directed by Kay Valentine – Dramedy – John has lost his stock trader job and taken on a phone sales one because he desperately needs the income. Little did he know how life changing it would be. But for whom?
The Next Move by William Ivor Fowkes, New York, NewYork, U.S.A., directed by Lee Clements – Drama – Donald & Roberta are an older, loving couple expecting company over. There is some confusion about who is or is not not be coming…..and all may not be as it seems!
Killing Time by Len Cuthbert, Mount Brydges, Ontario, Canada, directed by Amanda Dempsey-Laughlin – Comedy – A customer is challenged on his lifestyle choices when he makes his regular lunch visit at a local restaurant. But is it the same restaurant?
Friday September 6 – 8 P.M. – Doors Open 7:30 P.M.
The Third Rule, by Dan Aibel, Brooklyn New York, U.S.A., directed by Joan Burrows – Mystery – Matty is a children’s entertainer and brother Blake a cop. Will their interaction help solve a crime?
House of the Holy Moment by Cary Pepper, San Francisco, California U.S.A. – Drama / Social Satire, directed by Marlene Charney – Butch has opened a church in a town with many churches. Henrietta has been hired by the town to find out which ones are worthy. It may be up to Charlie who is seeking the meaning of life to decide!
Saturday September 7 – 8 P.M. – Doors Open 7:30 P.M.
The Nature of Stars by Rosemary Parrillo – Drama, Marlton New Jersey, U.S.A., directed by Gerri Sefi – Marcia is a poetry bookstore owner who is being forced to close after her landlord raised her rent beyond affordability. But before that happens, can poetry help her customers in their everyday lives? Can it help her?
Queen Mari’s Castle:Live! by Lisa Dellagiarino , Singapore – Dramedy, directed by Erika MacNeil – Lila, Kyle and Suzzane are actors in a travelling children’s theatre show while Taylor is the stage manager.They all see their lives and predicaments through their own lenses with Lila, a Julliard trained actor, feeling her role as a dog in the show is beneath her pedigree …However, watch what you wish for!
Sunday September 8 – 2 P.M. Young Company Matinee Show is Wheelchair and Aphasia Accessible
The V.U.T.C. Young Company presents Battle of the Plays, a musical – The White’s Family Funeral, a comedy – The Green Secrets, a mystery. Young Company show is wheelchair and aphasia accessible! features plays written, directed and performed by The VUTC Young Company, led by Kira Rosenbloom.
Opening night includes an opening night pre-show Red Carpet Party. Doors open at 7 P.M.. All other nights doors open 30 mins before the 8 PM start time. All Shows Wheelchair accessible.

Festival Passes for All Days – $50 – They get all 4 shows for this price.
