This year (2022) the Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays has added a youth element and young talent to its submission stable by being committed to presenting one performance matinee theatre show for Young Audiences (TYA).This idea was inspired by an entry in 2021 by local award winning Journalist, and Author of 3 books, turned playwright, Rod Urquhart, whose play adaptation (Gilda) of a children’s book, Gilda The Princess (also written by a beloved long time Newmarket resident, Olie Madsen) was well received. This new matinee addition will now provide a wonderful opportunity for emerging young people’s theatre playwrights – and hopefully youthful ones – to have their one act plays presented to paying live and streaming audiences both locally and worldwide!
Gilda’s talented 22 year old Director, Kira Rosenbloom, who will be Directing again at the festival in 2022, will also be hosting a series of online and or live workshops ( depending on pandemic circumstances) for any youths looking to hone their theatrical creative skills – from writing, to acting, to directing – which the hope is to inspire a future generation of performing arts enthusists – and maybe even some future stars! A plays reading committee is presently screening potential entries for the 2022 matinee show from a host of submissions. there’s limited availibilty so act now to ensure your participation!
So far the Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays has received 80 entries from around the English speaking world but there is still room for some more entries to be considered that are specifically aimed at young audiences. So, budding playwrights got a chance to submit a one act play. On April 2, 2022 listen/watch for an announcement regarding the final choices to be considered for this years festival after which festival organizers will begin to accept applicants for one act play Directors and then shortly thereafter that, invite Actors to audition. In 2021, rehearsals were held online mostly due to Covid 19 restrictions but we are hopeful for 2022 to be able to also have live rehearsals, pandemic restrictions willing. The festival runs September 8,9,10,11. Interested in our new youth workshops? Sun 11am Mar 20 102;7 Chop Fm Interview here.
